Making a Marking Gauge

Using up scrap wood around the shop I was able to create this marking gauge. The main beam is 8″ long by 3/4″ wide and 3/8″ thick. The fence is 2″x2″x1″ and was curved on the top for comfort, left flat on the bottom so when not in use it isn’t rolling around. The choice of wood was red oak for the beam and walnut for the fence. For easy adjust of the beam I used a brass threaded insert and then used a thumb screw to tighten and loosen the beam. I then finished it off by using boiled linseed oil and tacked a nail in the end for the actual scribe portion.
